APPEAL

Dear Sir /Madam,

Thank you so much for the support you have given art in Uganda. We really appreciate that and we are proud of you.

The growth of art in Uganda is a serious indicator of an improving economy. As other sectors of life improve, so does art. Although the buying community is still small, the fact is that art is growing.

The Uganda Artists Association is once again coming up to refine and re-shape this growth in good direction. Among the many things it is targeting to do is create a Resource center where art and artists of various styles can  reach and be reached with ease. To come up with this center we need your support. We appeal to you for a contribution towards the creation of this center.

Details of our requirements are attached at the back of this proposal. We shall forever be grateful to receive any item you may wish to contribute and your organization, name or company will be displayed at the center in a special way.

Thank you very much

Taga F. Nuwagaba.

Vice chairperson

HISTORICAL   BACKGROUND

Founded in the late 1960’s, the Uganda Artists’ Association had a few ups and downs in the 1970’s. Most of the people who could have supported the arts left Uganda under the regime of Amin to other countries.

Between 1979 and 1986 Uganda was going through the wars that brought tyranny and disorder. In 1989, the association was revived by a few artists as the country recovered from dictatorship and political upheavals.

Currently, UAA is active and runs weekly programmes at Nommo Gallery every Thursday evening.

UAA is dedicated to advancing the cause of art and culture in Uganda. Its membership is open to artists in their myriad practices, art historians, critics, collectors, writers and other related professionals.

        PROJECT    ORIGIN

The idea of creating an art Resource center open to the public was a result of artists meetings at Nommo gallery every Thursday between 4.00pm and 8.00pm.Almost each individual complained why of all countries Uganda is the only one that has no such facility.

The other complaint came from visitors who came to Uganda and would wish to look at the variety of art in Uganda. Although galleries do expose artists, they are too few.

The other reason is that galleries simply represent artists. They discourage anyone who may directly wish to visit the artists in their studios where most of the good work is normally found.

The notion that there is no art in Uganda by many writers and critics discourages tourism. The fact that Kenya has bigger artists than Uganda is infact untrue because Kenya’s big names in the art world originate from Uganda.  Jak Katarikawe is a typical example and Uganda gets no credit at all.

It therefore became an important issue to address and it is against this background that the idea of a Resource Centre started.

         SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

With the resource center in place the association will be able to independently exist on its own. The following are some of the strategies in place in order for the association to realize this goal:

q       ART CLASSES

There will be art classes at the association premises for persons interested in acquiring artistic skills. These will be conducted by a small selection of members of the association, experts in the various disciplines required. Classes conducted are in; drawing, painting in all media, sculpture, printing and graphic design programmes.

The charges will be levied according to the following categories of people:

Association members who may wish to acquire new skills----------------------ush.5,000

Individuals who are not members of the association but wish to acquire artistic

skills------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ush.10,000

Expatriate community----------------------------------------------------------------ush.20,000

NB: the charges listed are for every four hours.

q       ART AUCTIONS

Good artwork from  members of the association will be selected and auctioned twice a year. The artist names the price for his artwork and this price less the association percentage, 30% will be the floor price for the artwork during the auction. After a successful sale, the artist will be paid the amount quoted and the rest will go to the association coffers.

Auctions may not necessarily be held at the association premises, other venues like: hotel show rooms, private residences and embassies may be preferred depending on convenience.

q       THE GIFT SHOP

Plans are under way to open up a gift shop. Souvenirs, postcards, textiles, jewellery, and ceramics are some of the items we will have for sale.

For this project to succeed the association needs an initial capital of ush.5,000,000.

Average targeted income expected to be earned daily from the sale of items in the shop is US.$150.00,gross income.

q       THE ARTISTS MAGAZINE

An art magazine is being designed and the first edition is expected to be out by June 2003. It will have pages open to companies for advertisement. Companies and organizations that are interested, will be availed a page at a fee so that they can have their products advertised in the successive editions. The magazine will be produced on a quarterly basis and the first editions will be distributed free of charge in hotels, leisure centers and the airport.

q       MEMBERSHIP FEE

A minimum fee is charged on persons, organizations, co-corporations interested in joining the association. These are the following categories

Some of the Privileges enjoyed by members are:

o       The association organizes the exhibitions for exhibiting artists, schools, transports the artwork to and from the exhibition premises. This includes the cocktail parties, space and security for the artwork.

·        SUBSCRIPTION TO THE AFRICAN COLOURS WEB PAGE

The association was given a web page on the African colours website owned by Madam Carla Van Beers. This website exists solely to promote artists and provide information about art events in Africa. Members of the association will have their work on the website at no charge.

Artists who may wish to have their artwork on the website and are not members of the association will be required to pay a small fee that is yet to be determined.

Should the above ideas be fully implemented, which is possible with your help, the  executive can confidently say the Uganda Artists association will be fully self sustaining and  will be able to contribute to the development of art in Uganda in two years.
